Dr. Waldrep trained in surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California under some of the west coast pioneers of laparoscopic surgery. Subsequently, he was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery, as an instructor and researcher of advanced laparoscopic surgery. At USC, he was involved in both clinical and laboratory research aimed at broadening the applications and safety of minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Waldrep’s private practice is limited to advanced laparoscopic procedures, having performed or instructed thousands of advanced and complex laparoscopic procedures.
Dr. Waldrep has completed the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Advanced and Masters courses as well as the advanced laparoscopic bariatric surgery courses at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Stanford University. Dr. Waldrep was one the first surgeons to successfully complete the ASMBS Surgical Preceptorship curriculum.
Dr. Waldrep was appointed to the inaugural Bariatric Surgery Review Committee of the Surgical Review Corporation which served to establish national Center of Excellence criteria for bariatric surgery programs. Dr. Waldrep has served as the Medical Director for the Center for Bariatric Services at a Center of Excellence program. He was also a participating panel member for the Bariatric Surgery Policy Workgroup, a consortium of bariatric medical and surgical providers and California Association of Health Plans designed to develop a Consensus Statement for the evaluation, selection, and treatment of morbidly obese patients. Dr. Waldrep was also appointed a position as a surgical expert on the Obesity Provider Toolkit Expert Panel; an educational consensus panel comprised of the California Medical Association Foundation and California Association of Health Plans. This was the first expert panel meeting to collaboratively development an Obesity Provider Toolkit addressing the growing obesity epidemic in the state of California.
Dr. Waldrep is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the Society for Minimally Invasive Therapy, and the American Society of General Surgeons.
Dr. Waldrep has authored articles on advanced laparoscopic surgery, as well as traditional general surgery in Annals of Surgery, American Journal of Surgery, Surgical Endoscopy, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, and American Surgeon as well as several textbook chapters.
Dr. Waldrep and his patients have been featured on NBC-TV, ABC-TV, E! Entertainment, USA Today.com, Sacramento Bee, the Ventura Star, and nationally syndicated health and weight loss specials.
